Nephi makes two sets of records—Each is called the plates of Nephi—The larger plates contain a secular history; the smaller ones deal primarily with sacred things.

All of this happened as we dwelt in tents in the valley of Lemuel, and also many other things happened which cannot be written upon these plates.

And seeing as I have spoken about these plates, know that they are not the plates which I use to make the entire account of the history of my people; that is reserved for the plates which I call after my name, the plates of Nephi, though these plates are also called the plates of Nephi.

Nonetheless, I have received a commandment from the Lord to make these plates for the special purpose of having a record of the ministry of my people.

On the other plates should be written a record of the reign of kings and the wars and contentions of my people. The plates upon which I write now are for the most part the ministry, and the other plates are for the most part the reign of kings and the wars and contentions of my people.

And thus the Lord has commanded me to make these plates for a wise purpose in Him, though I do not know the purpose.

But the Lord knows all things from the beginning, and so He prepares a way to complete all His works among the children of men, for see and know that He has all power for the fulfilling of all His words! Thus it is, thus it has always been, and thus it always will be. Amen.
